Location Work
I filmed in Nepal between 2016 and 2018 - an award-winning short documentary, an international conference film for Animals Asia, and a series of documentary portraits. I am open to overseas and international production work.
Between 2016 and 2018 I made multiple trips to Nepal, producing an award-winning short documentary screened at the Liverpool Short Film Festival, event film for the Animals Asia International Conference, and a series of short documentary portraits. The work grew out of a long-standing connection with the country - the high trekking routes, the people I met along the way, and a place that rewards a filmmaker who takes the time to get to know it. All three projects are documented below. I am available for overseas and international location filming: if you have a project that needs a director or DOP on the ground, I would like to hear from it.
Animals Asia brought together charities and NGOs from across the globe for their international conference - a gathering of animal welfare organisations celebrating wins, sharing knowledge, and setting the agenda for conservation globally, not just in Asia. I supplied the main event film screened at the conference, anchoring the central session and reflecting the collective work of a remarkable group of organisations. The brief sat at the intersection of advocacy, event production and documentary filmmaking - exactly the kind of work I do for charities and NGOs in the UK and internationally.
This short documentary follows a mahout - an elephant driver - in Nepal who sets out to become a police officer. What he runs into is the gap between ambition and what the world around him thinks he is permitted to become: caste difference, expectation, and the quiet weight of a system that has already decided his place in it. The film won the Liverpool Short Film Festival. It was supported by One World Media, produced by Laura Gregory, and filmed with Nepal-based fixer Manoj Gautham - whose knowledge of the country and access to the right people made the film possible.

Sauraha sits at the edge of Chitwan National Park in the lowland Terai, far from the mountains Nepal is usually associated with. This short documentary is a portrait of a beekeeper there who teaches beekeeping to local people and sells honey from his hives - including rock honey, a wild highland variety harvested from cliff faces that produces a mild hallucinogenic effect. It is a small film about a specific skill, a particular relationship with the natural world, and a person who has built something genuinely unusual. This is the kind of documentary portrait work I bring back from every location I spend proper time in.
